Best of The Best 2006

The Best of the Best 2006 is an international contest of logos, trademarks and corporate identities. 970 projects received from participants from 24 countries and approved by clients were engaged in the contest.

I really like the logo for F & C (winner of the Logo for Industrial Company). But my favorite? The logo for Watch & Clock, by Stanislav Topol’skiy (Ukraine). A brilliant logo.

New York Times Redesigns

The New York Times website has been redesigned, and my first impression is not a great one. I’m not loving it. Sure, I know it’s the first draft, but it just doesn’t quite work.

1. The big square ad is bigger than the prime, central photo. And not much bigger, so you have two primary, central elements that compete for my initial focus.
2. Lots of little, disjointed links/nav along the top and side. Seems a bit confusing, and no rhyme or reasons to what’s where.
3. The differentation between the second level stories and the third level stories isn’t enough I feel.

Design Links

A bunch of design and development links for you today. The majority (90%?) of these links came from etc the past couple of months.

• Create really cool new windows using prototype. You can then use script.aculo.us to have the sexy effects on the window. You must try the demos.
• 24ways really deserves it’s own post. It’s got 24 great tutorials/posts on how to do things. Things such as:
  • Swooshy Curly Quotes without Images is great for pullout quotes.
  • Improving Form accessibility with DOM Scripting.
  • An explanation of ems.
• Russ Weakley shows us how to create simple, accessible external links. He uses a class in this example, but I’ve seen the same thing done using a Regex parser to loop through all the links. But that’s probably a bit much.
• Tagcloud lets you create and manage clouds with content you are interested in, and lets you publish them on your own website.
