10 Usability Heuristics.

by Jackob Nelson. This should be read and understood by EVERYONE that does a web page or site.

Definition:
heuÔø?risÔø?tic
adj.
1. Of or relating to a usually speculative formulation serving as a guide in the investigation or solution of a problem: Ôø?The historian discovers the past by the judicious use of such a heuristic device as the Ôø?ideal typeÔø?Ôø? (Karl J. Weintraub).

2. Of or constituting an educational method in which learning takes place through discoveries that result from investigations made by the student.

3. Computer Science. Relating to or using a problem-solving technique in which the most appropriate solution of several found by alternative methods is selected at successive stages of a program for use in the next step of the program.

Now, in college art classes, one of the earlier things we learnt was that rules were important. You must understand and be able to use the rules. Once you can use and understand those rules, you can then break those rules. Think about that for a second.

You got it. You CAN break these heuristics, if you have a solid understanding of HOW you are breaking them and WHY you are breaking them.
