Boxes and Arrows has an excellent article on Controlled Vocabularies.
“A controlled vocabulary is a way to insert an interpretive layer of semantics between the term entered by the user and the underlying database to better represent the original intention of the terms of the user.”
Controlled vocabularies encompass synonyms (jeans and dungarees), homonyms (bank and bank) misspellings, changes in content, “Best Bets”, connecting items (a woman’s married name to her maiden name), and connecting abbreviations to the full word (NY to New York).
This nice article covers ways to identify and use controlled vocabularies. I highly recommend this article.
