Michael J. Darnell has created an interesting "scrapbook of bad human factors engineering":http://www.baddesigns.com/examples.html.
He goes through product by product, and outlines the problem concisely, and then offers design suggestions. There is a photo with each bad product design. Well thought out format. I wish it was better designed in the sense of UI design, but the content is very, very nice.
The example of the "coffee cup(of which I own)":http://www.baddesigns.com/cup.html is a prime example. I like this cup. But he is absolutely correct is getting coffee on the tip of your nose. It's annoying. And a poor design choice.
And the "gas cap(on your car)":http://www.baddesigns.com/gascap.html answer is fantastic. One that I actually never thought of. Just have a standard side for gas caps on cars. Duh. People really are trained to accept bad designs and treat it as part of your life.
Wonderful site with TONS of interesting bad designs, and useful suggestions to improve on. ( link via Metafilter )
