IBM's Collaborative User Experience Team (CUE) has spent almost a decade studying email. They've come up with some interesting ideas. I myself really like the visualizations section of their research. (I really like threaded arcs) In many ways, it does appear that their prototype email client mimics Outlook in many aspects. But I like the fact they built this from the ground up, looking for ways to improve the email experience. Interesting stuff.
