The U.S. State Department has issued an edict that bans it's longtime standard typeface for a “more modern&rduo; typeface.
They are dumping Courier New 12, and replacing it with Times New Roman 14 for all official correspondence. (of course, there are three exceptions to this already: telegrams, treaty materials prepared by legal affairs office, and documents drawn up for the president's signature).
First off, I don't know why they think Times New Roman is a “more modern” font. It's painfully crappy. It flat out sucks. It sucks at 10pt, 12pt, and most defintely at 14pt.
I like Courier. I understand that I like Courier for it's on-screen purposes. Printed out, I can see where it might not be the best.
They should have gone with ANY other font. Impact? Helvetica? Century Schoolbook? How about buying a real font guys? Then you get into real fonts.
Nope. All of our important State Documents are going to be in painfully big ugly type.
Except for those exceptions. What is that about? I understand telegrams. And I guess legal affairs said “Kiss my ass”, and you can't really force a bunch of lawyers to do anything. But the documents for the President? That's odd.
The whole thing is odd, and makes me mad. Probably because I hate Times New Roman so fucking much. And 14 pt? That just further enrages me.
