Net, Web, Tree and Root.

New top level domains considered harmful is a wonderful article from Tim Berners-Lee. It outlines why .mobi and .xxx are bad ideas. A great read.
The short answer is that it is unwise, as an architectural principle, to put semantics into names. However, this may not not enough to explain to its proponents what is wrong with the idea. This article attempts to elaborate a little.
