Google and Images

Tim Bray has found out that Google indexes pictures wrong. Tim was using alt tags just like you’re supposed to be doing, and yet he couldn’t find those images via the image search.

He did discover that the file name is indexed, and given a lot of weight. Odd. You’d figure that Google would have a better system for indexing images. You’d think that the alt tags would weigh more.

Strange indeed.

(by the way : nice additions to your site design, Tony)

It is weird isn't it? I'd understand the oddity of it if it were a new addition to Google, but the Image Search has been around forever.

Good to hear from you Francois.

Not that strange really. It used to be a good hack to enter as many SEM terms you could within the alt tags, reflecting the keywords and description terms. Google probably got fed-up with all the fluff, and started to ignore them.

Just came back from Tunisia :)
