Edward Tufte has posted a chapter from his upcoming book, Beautiful Evidence, on his website.
The chapter is called “Mapped Pictures: Images as Explanations and Evidence”, and is just brilliant. As usual. I cannot wait to own this book.
I really like the Dürer woodcut (shocker), and slave-trade image is a classic example of layered information.
The mapping shown withing the drawings (outlines and legends under the photo) are always so effective, and always make me feel so involved. It gives you a sense of achievment, and it’s fun.
The chapter itself is gorgeous. I don’t think it’s as intruiging as Sparklines, but it does reinforce some of his core messages (layered information). This book can’t be published soon enough.
